So, remember back quite a while ago, I mentioned something about fundraising for a volunteer thing to Africa? (You can see the original post here) Well, I have an update on that!
We will be leaving at the end of December, just before Christmas, and heading out to 3 different countries in Africa to do a number of different volunteer programs.
Firstly, the most important things!
Where and what, exactly, you may ask?
First, we will start out in Kenya, where we will teach rural children English, Math and Geography, as well as computer and practical business skills, so they are able to develop a tourism/commercial sector. In addition to teaching, we will also help with building wells, and building for medical and educational purposes. We will be here for about 3 weeks, getting to know the children and other villagers who desperately need our help. From Kenya, we will be heading to South Africa, where we will be working on a eco-tourism farm, which works to run local community projects, such as teaching and wildlife conservation, and bring in foreign money in the form of tourism. We will be doing small construction projects, as well as assisting with hiking trail development, plant and tree identification and control, as well as education involving local communities. We will be here for about 2 months.
Finally, we will be heading to Namibia, where we will be spending our time on a safari guest farm. Here, we will be spending our time on the farm helping to run the kindergarten, as well as teaching the locals English for their business. We will also be doing research in regards to local animals and plant life, as well as ways of doing eco friendly waste and water management. We will be here for 6 weeks. As you can see, we will be quite busy working with locals in rural communities; locals with small businesses; as well as a lot of education. We desperately need extra funds to be able to pay the overhead and donation fees that come along with these projects, as well as to be able to purchase small gifts and toys for the children in the villages.
So, please, please, help in whatever way you can-every little bit helps, as I think our efforts in helping those in need will hopefully show!
Peace and love.xox

La Carmina Interview-Goth Fashionista and World traveller
Due to some interesting circumstances, I had the absolute honor of giving La Carmina a small interview about the goth travel lifestyle.
But, before I get into the interview, there's a few things you should know about this lovely lady!
La Carmina is a fashion, alt culture and travel TV host (Taboo, Bizarre Foods, oddities and World's weirdest restaurants), author of several books, journalist (including The New Yorker, Cosmopolitan, Vogue and LA Times) and a professional blogger over at lacarmina.com
In short, she is a jack of all trades, and looks amazing as she does it. Seriously, how awesome is that outfit?
Other really cool things about her? She's from Vancouver; she's done work all over the world for a TONNE of different corporations; she has several books published; she runs a coolhunting company (La Carmina and the Pirates); regularly contributes work to CNN and Huffington Post on fashion and travel; AND, if that wasn't enough, she is the single most nicest, most amazing celebrity that I have had the experience of chatting with.
La Carmina: I’ve discovered that there is fascinating alt culture in the most
unexpected of places. Cities like LA, Berlin and Tokyo are known for
their vibrant Goth scenes. But I had an equally wonderful time
drinking absinthe in an intimate Phoenix, Arizona Gothic party. I also
loved trying squeaky curds and swinging on a bondage bed in Wisconsin.
It’s impossible to name a favorite place since they all have unique
qualities; I’ve simply become more eager than ever to keep exploring
the world.
Of all of history's past goth fashion trends, which would you like
to see make a comeback?
I’d like to live in a world where people wear giant sailboats on their
heads, as they did in the Rococo court of Marie Antoinette.
In your opinion, what is the best place for goth culture/scene in
North America? Europe?
It’s hard to name a favorite, since I enjoy smaller, more relaxed
scenes as much as the crazy, explosive ones. However, as a Goth travel
destination, I recommend Los Angeles; many big bands come here and the
club scene is electrifying. Here are my LA Gothic recommendations:
http://www.lacarmina.com/blog/ category/seba-in-america/
For Europe, Berlin is a must: it’s gritty, deathrock heaven. I also
adore Prague’s absinthe and Art Nouveau. I hope you find my Europe
Goth travel guides useful:

Favourite music (bands or genre) to travel to?
My blog readers know I have a weakness for cheesy Italo Disco. What
can I say? It perks me up and puts me in a good mood.
Favourite underground trend you want to see come into the mainstream?
How about bagelhead forehead inflation in Japan? Just kidding. (Info
on bagelheads: http://www.lacarmina.com/blog/ 2012/10/bagel-head-trend- japan-truth-japanese- bagelheads-website-saline- forehead-inflation-donut- taboo/)
It’s an extreme form of body morphing and expression that not everyone
will understand, and for this reason, I hope it stays in the hands (or
foreheads) of those who are truly passionate about it.
Fashion trend you most want to see die a fiery death?
I don’t hate on any styles, as I think fashion is an individual
expression. Something like khakis might be too conservative or
predictable for one person, but fit another person perfectly. However
I think it’s beneficial for everyone to dress in colors and cuts that
flatter them.
City, country, event you have yet to see that's at/near the top of your list?
So many! Dubai, Egypt, Transylvania, New Orleans, South America,
Africa… and I can never get tired of traveling in Asia.
Were there any countries that didn't approve of your pro-alt
culture fashion of ideas?
I sometimes get funny stares, but generally, people are more curious
than disapproving. I think reactions can depend on how you carry
yourself. If you smile and are open, chances are that you will have a
positive interaction.
Favourite piece that you just cannot part with?
I still wear some investment pieces that I picked up over 10 years
ago, during my travels. My long, fuzzy white coat from London is
timeless to me.
Favourite hair and makeup product you discovered during your travels?
I always stock up on decadent false eyelashes and lash glue while in
Hong Kong and Japan. They're much cheaper and better than the ones in
the West.
When you travel for extended periods of time, how do you decide
what comes with, and what stays at home?
I don’t stress too much about packing, since I can pick up essentials
along the way. If I’m doing on-camera TV work, I always bring my basic
makeup products (especially Make Up Forever HD foundation and powder),
and prepare my outfits ahead of time. You can see my TV hosting reels
at http://www.lacarmina.com/bio. php
Have you considered getting Basil Farrow a friend? If so, would
he/she also be a Scottish Fold, or another variety?
It’s Fold or nothing! They’re an incredible breed; so gentle and
intelligent and fuzzy-faced. However Basil Farrow is the Pharoah --
I’m sure he wants to keep my full attention, and not share any
portions of food! Tons of his cute photos are at:

See? Single most awesome lady that does proves that those in the alt scene can be seriously successful without giving up their individuality and sense of self.
Where can you find this lovely lady? Why, various places, including

And now, for the interview!

Pancakes!
I may have mentioned this once or twice, but I like to be healthy. I exercise a lot, and I try to eat clean food, and I watch what I eat.
I mean, sure, I have a killer sweet tooth, but, I think I'm allowed a vice or two.
But, I digress.
One of the amazing fitness tumblr ladies I follow posted this AMAZING recipe for pancakes.
Not just any pancakes, no. Pancakes without flour. Yea, that's right. No flour! There are several varieties, but I'm all about the protein variety.
It's a small recipe, and is perfect for one. I doubled it for the hubs and I, and it was just the perfect amount.
The Basic Recipe!
1 banana
2 eggs.
Mash, skillet, flip, done.
No, seriously. That's it.
The Protein Variety (for 2)
1 banana
2 eggs
2 scoops protein powder (I like vanilla)
2 tsp cinnamon
2 tbsp _____milk
Mash, skillet, flip, done.
I served it with fresh strawberries, french vanilla yogurt and some coffee. Nice, clean way to start the day.
And so tasty!

Yet another thing I'm doing
I do a lot of things, don't i?
So, I am still doing the book about self harm! Post over here and information is in the Projects header ^
But, new thing!
I am hoping to volunteer my time at a wildlife preservation this summer, between my semesters, down in South Africa.
Cool, right?
But also expensive. As such, I am looking to get donations from animal and adventure loving people, who want to further a broke ass student in her studies and goals in life!
Now, over 1/3 of the money raised is directly for the wildlife preservation to help pay for their overhead, food, medicine and the paid (local) labor. The rest of it is pretty much all flights. Because, holy crap, flying to Johannesburg is expensive!
If you can donate, or want more information about this project, there are links in the Projects header ^ and here is the link to the gofundme page I have set up. There are more details to be found there!
Donate to me!
We are offering small rewards to those who donate money. Now, keep in mind, broke ass students here. We are doing the best we can to help those in need, while still being able to afford school (not as easy as you think).
We are trying to do something that we both (hubs and I) think is important. We want to not only be able to see some of the endangered wildlife in Africa, but we also want to do what we can to help ensure the survival of those species.
Did you know what there are only 4 white rhinos in the wild today? 4. And the idea that they are killed for the stupidest fake "science" ever makes me sick.
It is humans who have destroyed the habitat, the water and the food. It is humans who kill and maim them for fun.
And it should be humans who do what they can to save them.
So, please help, if you can.

My new Project
I know I mentioned that I had a project on the go before, and now, here is its official (?) announcement. Or something. That project is put on hold. Here is a new project instead!
It's still in its very early stages, and there is still a lot of planning to go, but I feel that it's time to let the world know what I got going on. I guess.
I am writing a book. Well, in a way. I am collecting stories and photos and, along with my own stories and photos and commentary and compiling them into a book.
What kind of book, you ask?
A book about cutting.
Not bodybuilding cutting, but, blade to skin, blood welling kind of cutting.
This is something that is very personal to me, and I think that its important that the truth gets out there, so that the people who suffer can get proper help. The media has demonized cutters, and those who suffer from self hate, and most of it simply isn't true. Instead of helping, most people end up hurting us even more, driving us to hate ourselves more for not being perfect.
This needs to stop.
That said, I am looking for submissions from current and former self-harmers. Short stories, thoughts, feeling, blurbs, photos, poetry ANYTHING. So, please, spread the word to anyone you know that can help out. Those who submit have the option of being credited for their input, or remaining anonymous. I will never give out the identity of someone who wishes to remain unknown.
Once this book gets made, majority of the proceeds will go to various mental help clinics, and help groups.
So, please help me with this project if you can! Spread the word, submit, and do whatever you can!

Rant...?
I don't feel like its too bad of a rant, but, you have been warned.
As much as I think that most people ARE stupid, I also believe that they have every right to be, without someone trying to take their right away from them.
I think, if anything, you-and I use you in the sense of a collective-you have control over what you do with your own body. You, and you alone.
I was on Facebook, and one of my friends asked for a tattoo parlor recommendation, to which one of her friends responded that tattoos are horrible, and make people ugly, and that it is a bad decision all around.
I took offense. Lots and lots of offense.
But not because I am a tattooed person, but because I am for equal rights and support a body positive attitude.
So, being the person that I am, I called this person out on their anti-body positive attitude. Seems pretty reasonable, or so I thought.
Naturally-since it IS the internet and all-she accused me of hating people that I had never met.
To which my response was:
I don't hate you because you're right, I don't know you. That said, I dislike people forcing their judgementsThis is one of those things that I feel pretty strongly against. By telling someone that they cannot do something, you are saying that they are stupid and need to be cared for, like a subhuman, and not worthy of their own choices.
on others. You don't like tattoos, so you think no one else should have them. What if someone said they
didn't like gay people, so they couldn't marry. Or they were prolife so no one could have a choice if they
wanted a baby. Or what if they said women have no rights so rape didn't exist. By telling someone they
shouldn't do something that they have chosen to for, you are telling them that YOU know what's best for
them, thus taking away the basic human right of choice.
And that is a world I will fight against.
As much as I think that most people ARE stupid, I also believe that they have every right to be, without someone trying to take their right away from them.
I think, if anything, you-and I use you in the sense of a collective-you have control over what you do with your own body. You, and you alone.

Fall semester-we are done
For better or worse, this semester is finally done. About damn time, too. This is awesome for a lot of reasons, mostly because I have had about 8 hours of sleep in the last 3 days, and I could really use a nap, rather than another 12 hour study session.
I could also use a solid workout at the gym. Which I will be doing shortly. This will be one of my last workouts at the YMCA because I cancelled my membership.
Why, you might ask?
Well, today is special for more than just the end of finals. It's also my last day at my current college. I am transferring to SFU for next semester, and that university has it's own gym. It does mean that I'll be working out at home for the next few weeks, but I got some awesome workout already planned out.
This is also the last day that I am an English major. I start my new major in Spring, and, I, for one, and looking forward to it.
But, after I get a few solid hours of sleep, of course.
This also gives me time to get all my projects started and stuff. I am starting some really cool stuff soon, and, when I have more to say, I'll make a post, but for now, just know that awesness is afoot.
I have also got myself a new artist for my comic. I just don't have the time, or the artistic talent to do it, and my readers deserve better. The girl that I'm going to be working with is awesome. She sent me a few sketches and, guys, this will be great! I am super excited.
I've also been in talks with a few other artists for a few more comics. I can't draw for anything, but, man, I can write. I actually find it hard to stop creating stories. It takes a bit of time to finish them all, but I have loads of them. Hopefully one of them becomes super awesome, and I can go to comic cons as a guest. Wishful thinking, I know.
Now, for that gym and then sleep I so desperately need. Enjoy this video if you are feeling down, or need a quick fix for adorablness.

Blah
Things have been just that lately-really blah. It's that time when I need to remember all the things I learned last year-before my vacation to Korea, and catch up on reading so i can stay ahead. And not fuck up all my labs.
And it seems that I have a lot of things to do, and have been neglecting all the fun things. But I haven;t. My comic has been updated regularly; I've been seeing friends; reading comics; spending time with my husband...I dunno.
I don't want to say I'm in a rut, because I'm not, but it almost feels like it. I think its more that I need to get used to doing real school again. It's only the second week of classes, and I haven't quite gotten into the groove of things yet.
There are some cool things coming up though!
First!
Lead Led Love-the comic I write, that husband draws, is updating regularly! It's even going to get out of the gore, and into more dialogue soon! Favourite it to stay posted on updates!
We are headed to VCON at the end of the month. Going to see some panels, and maybe get some tips on writing more sci-fi, so i can finally finish one of my OTHER comics (god, I know, right?). Also, to participate in general geekiness.
We will be hitting up Anime Evolution in November, withOUT a table, but we may have some stuff to add to the free table, for promotional reasons.
That may be it? Maybe not?

10 things you likely didn't know about me!
For those who want to know more about me! Friends, or otherwise, will likely find something here that they didn't know. And it you don't want to read it all (TLDR-I get it) just read the points in BOLD.
1. I am extremely introverted
I mean, like woah. I can spend time with my friends, but, even with my best friends, when I spend too much time around people, I need an alone break. Sometimes, it gets bad, and I need to spend days alone. I've got enough of a handle on it that I can do a few days, but, it takes its tole on me.
People exhaust me.
The inside of my head is my favourite place to be.
2. I am a militant vegetarian
While I AM allergic to meat (seriously, actually tested), I wouldn't eat it anyways. I think its gross; bad for the environment; inhumane; and just unnecessary. And people who eat meat, but refuse to be told-or reminded-of what they are eating make me sick. If you can't accept the fact that you are eating a dead animals carcass, then you don't deserve that life that has been given to you for food.
3. I am an environmentalist
I am huge on the environment. I'm pretty sure that since humanity fucked everything up, its our responsibility to fix it. Global warming? Fact. Wide spread pollution? Fact. Lower air quality on a global scale? Fact. Sushi eating dickbags eating the entire ocean dry of life? Fact. People are doing this, and its about goddamn time people took responsibility.
4. I am currently in college-but I already have a diploma
I am in school for both English, as my Associates, and Earth and Ocean science (or Physical earth science). But this is not my first stint in post secondary education. Nor is it my second. Way back when I finished high school-a complete failure, barely passed, not even college worthy-I tried to sneak into university be doing Distance classed at the University of Guelph. Now, that didn't work out, for a lot of reasons (but not my grades, surprisingly) and I jumped ship. I worked for a while, and then went to the Ottawa Academy of Beauty for advanced aesthetics and cosmetology. I graduated with honors, and did that for a while. Which didn't work out because of 1.
5. I kinda want to save the world-an by world, I mean just that. The planet. Not the people.
This related back to 3. People are dicks. There is only 1 earth, and things are finite. If I could, I'd wipe out over half the population-preferably the stupid half-and then live in a global, sustainable manner, with no over population, no useless killing/poaching/etc, and all that. I want to sorta save the oceans, and all those animals that humans have caused to be endangered.
6. I have an almost psychotic hatred of kids and people who sing in public
Kids? I fucking hate kids. No, I will NOT change my mind. I'm 28 years old, so fuck you and your fucking biological clock bullshit. Not gonna happen. Singing in public? You can actually thank Korea for that one. There was this one annoying little shit that would sing EVERYWHERE, and i sorta wanted to murder the little shit.
7. I am exercise-aholic.
Does this need explanation? When I was younger, I hated working out. I was lazy, and liked drugs, I was an outcast, and sorta hated all the jocks in the world. Now? I work out with the best of them. I lift weights, I run, I do yoga, I like martial arts-all of it. I am at the gym usually 4-6 days a week. I don't generally talk about it since I believe that I can be, and do whatever I want without having to tell the whole world.
8. I almost married a woman once. But she said no. And that's all you need to know about that.
9. I have this thing where I have low self esteem, but I still think I'm better than everyone else.
And this has been proven. Both parts. I've won awards for my writing, and my art. I've participated in some awesome community projects, I don't litter, and I'm pretty honest. So I'm awesome. But I have this crippling low self esteem thing where I feel like I could be more awesome.
Or something.
10. I collect books and teddy bears.
I used to read like it was going out of style-which it was. I don't AS much, which I would like to change, but I have been busy. And all my reading lately has been for school. Teddy bears? Man, I love them. I have so many, its almost embarrassing.
BONUS!
11. I came into my 'geekdom' late in life. Not because I didn;t enjoy geeky things, but because I thought it was shameful to be into video games, books, anime, and comics when I was a teenager. I blame my friends, and the crowd that I ran with ie. the drug kids
But, now that that is over! I love comics, and anime, and geek stuff, and movies, and fantasy, and sci fi, and cute things, and video games, and, chances are, I can beat your ass at Mario kart.

And so we usher in a new year
A very happy New Year to everyone! May this year be full of the things that were the best of last year, and free from the worst.
This year has been full of good food, great fun and amazing friends and experiences that I am so lucky to have. I hope to continue this into this new year, and even add some more awesome.
Some of my ongoing goals for this year include
-reaching my health goal of being fit and healthy and strong
-Actually finish my webcomic
-be more honest with myself
-Write more
-Go to Thailand and do a Muay Thai training camp
-Visit the fam jam
-live more
-laugh more
-Dance more
And overall, live this one life I have to its fullest. None of those are resolutions, or some such thing, but rather they are the things that I want to change or continue in my life. I only have one life, and I want to enjoy and experience everything this huge wide world has to offer.
2011 was pretty good, and I am ready to bring it on in 2012.
